Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina

Overview

The Consolidated PBY Catalina was a long-range flying boat (and amphibious PBY-5A) that defined Allied maritime patrol in the Second World War. With exceptional endurance, it hunted submarines, escorted convoys, rescued downed aircrew, and flew night 'Black Cat' attack missions in the Pacific. The type's high wing, twin radials, and boat hull allowed operations from sheltered water when runways were scarce. Catalinas served with the U.S. Navy and many Allied forces; postwar surplus machines worked as fire bombers and freighters. The PBY remains one of the most important patrol aircraft ever built—less glamorous than fighters, but central to the Battle of the Atlantic and Pacific sea control.
