Southwest Icon Lounges remain scheduled to begin opening in late 2027, the airline reiterated as part of its October 2026 financial disclosures. The initial network covers four U.S. airports, with access expected through a new premium credit card issued by Chase.

This is not a newly announced lounge project. Southwest originally disclosed the program on Sept. 2; its Oct. 21 earnings release and subsequent quarterly filing provided another official confirmation of the direction of travel.

The carrier’s move is notable because airport lounges have traditionally been associated with premium products offered by other large U.S. airlines. The rollout forms part of Southwest’s broader customer-experience and loyalty strategy.

Southwest Icon Lounges Will Start in Four Cities

For Southwest Icon Lounges, the airline identifies Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, and Nashville International Airport as its initial lounge locations.

The airline’s official lounge information page says the first locations are expected to open beginning in late 2027. Construction at the initial four airports had already begun when Southwest first outlined the program in September.

Southwest plans at least seven more locations over the following years, but has not supplied a complete public list of those airports or a precise opening calendar for each lounge. Eleven locations would therefore represent the stated current plan, not eleven facilities already operating.

The carrier describes spaces with locally inspired dining and amenities drawing on its partnership with Chase. Those descriptions set expectations for the intended experience; detailed final menus, eligibility rules and hours have not yet been provided.

New Premium Card Is Intended to Unlock Access

For Southwest Icon Lounges, a new premium Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card issued by Chase will provide lounge access when the network opens. The airline said the card is expected in 2027 and has not published complete eligibility and fee terms in the material reviewed.

Southwest’s third-quarter SEC filing says the company and Chase amended their co-brand agreement during the quarter to extend the relationship and add the new premium card offering. That detail gives the lounge strategy a contractual and loyalty-program connection.

For passengers, it will matter whether access requires card membership, what guests and companions can do, and whether an eligible traveler must hold a same-day Southwest boarding pass. Those questions are not settled by the general announcement.

TAD previously covered Southwest’s planned 2027 Rapid Rewards tiers. The lounge network is another element in the same customer-facing transformation, but should not be mistaken for a benefit available to all loyalty members.

October Results Put the Lounge Plan in Context

The Southwest Icon Lounges plan was highlighted again in the airline’s Oct. 21 earnings announcement, Southwest reported third-quarter operating revenue of $8.4 billion, up 21.2% year over year. It also reported net income of $270 million and adjusted net income of $328 million.

The airline said it faced an $821 million year-over-year increase in nominal fuel costs, yet operating margins improved. Those figures were released alongside updates on loyalty, partnerships and customer-facing products, including the already announced lounge network.

Southwest also outlined plans to complete fleet-wide Starlink Wi-Fi installation in fall 2027 and listed additional airline partnerships. These programs are distinct from the lounge buildout, although the company groups them under efforts to improve the overall travel experience.

For now the lounge proposition is a future service. Passengers cannot treat a planned 2027 launch as proof that a particular location will be open for a booking next summer, and any new credit card’s exact terms should be checked when the issuer releases them.
