The Finland F-35 program marked a new basing milestone with an Oct. 1 ceremony at Rovaniemi for the country’s first two F-35As permanently based in Finland.

Lockheed Martin said Finland had received 10 of its planned 64 aircraft, with eight remaining temporarily at Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Arkansas for training.

Air Data News reported that the two Rovaniemi aircraft actually landed in Finland on Sept. 18. The Oct. 1 event was therefore a ceremony marking their arrival, not the landing date itself.

Finland F-35 Basing Begins at Rovaniemi

Air Data News identified the first two locally based aircraft as JF-510 and JF-512. It reported that they crossed the Atlantic after departing Fort Worth and stopping at Lajes before arriving at Rovaniemi.

Lockheed Martin said the Finnish Air Force hosted the Oct. 1 event. The company described the two aircraft as the first F-35As permanently based in Finland.

Air Data News reported that U.S. pilots flew the two aircraft on the transatlantic move and that Finnish Hornets escorted them on arrival. Those details place the September transfer in the wider handover process before routine Finnish operation of the type.

Ten Aircraft Delivered, Eight Still in Arkansas

Both sources say Finland has received 10 aircraft from its 64-jet program. Eight are temporarily based at Ebbing Air National Guard Base, where Finnish personnel are using the aircraft for training.

Air Data News reported that the first Finnish pilot flew an F-35 in April 2026. The split fleet allows training in the United States to continue while Finland begins establishing the type at home.

The Arkansas detachment remains part of the transition because Finland is still building pilot and maintainer experience while aircraft deliveries continue. The sources reviewed do not indicate that the eight training aircraft have moved permanently to Finland.

The Operational Timeline Extends to 2030

Air Data News reported that Lapland Air Wing is scheduled to begin F-35 operations in 2028, with the transition expanding later to Karelia Air Wing.

The outlet said Finland is targeting full operational capability by the end of 2030. Those dates describe the planned transition rather than a declaration that the fleet is operational today.
